Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that’s accessible to nearly all age groups, with programs tailored to various developmental stages. Here's a general breakdown:
Tiny Tots (Ages 3–7): Focus on basic movements, coordination, discipline, and fun.
Youth (Ages 8–13): Introduction to technique, positional control, and beginner-level sparring.
More structured training with a blend of technique, conditioning, and controlled sparring. Some teens also begin to compete more seriously.
Most adult practitioners fall into this range. BJJ for adults can be tailored to fitness, self-defense, competition, or just lifelong learning.
Many people start BJJ in their 40s, 50s, or even later. IBJJF even has a Masters division for competitors aged 30–60+. Training is typically modified for joint safety and recovery time, but it's still very effective and fulfilling.
No! You don't need to be in shape before starting BJJ. We welcome students of all fitness levels, and many people begin their journey with us specifically to get in better shape.
BJJ training itself is an excellent way to build cardio, strength, and flexibility. You'll naturally develop fitness as you learn and practice the techniques. Our instructors understand that everyone starts at a different level, and our beginner classes are designed to accommodate students who are just starting their fitness journey.
During your first few weeks, it's normal to feel challenged and maybe a bit sore - that's true for everyone, regardless of their starting fitness level. You can train at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and gradually build your endurance over time.
The most important thing is just showing up and getting started. We're here to support you every step of the way!
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the safest martial arts you can practice! Unlike striking-based martial arts, BJJ focuses on controlled grappling techniques, making it accessible for people of all ages.
What makes BJJ safe:
- The tap system - you can tap out anytime, and your partner immediately stops
- Cooperative training - you work with partners, not against them
- Expert instruction - our coaches teach proper technique and enforce safety protocols
- Progressive learning - you master the basics before advancing
While you might experience minor soreness or the occasional bruise as you learn (just like any sport), serious injuries are rare. We maintain a respectful, safety-first culture where students look out for each other.
Thousands of people train BJJ safely every day - from kids to seniors. Come see for yourself during a free trial class!
BJJ is fantastic for kids! Our youth program builds confidence, discipline, and respect while teaching practical self-defense skills in a fun, safe environment.
What your child will gain:
- Self-confidence and anti-bullying skills
- Discipline, respect, and focus
- Physical fitness and coordination
- Problem-solving abilities (BJJ is like physical chess!)
- Positive friendships and teamwork
Our kids' classes are age-appropriate with experienced instructors who know how to keep training safe and engaging. Parents consistently tell us they see improvements not just in their child's fitness, but also in their focus at school and confidence in daily life.
